Charles Uzzell Edwards aka Octopus aka Pure Evil

    who ?

There is an artificial Intelligence called the 'Octopus’ somewhere out there, swimming in the deep waters of the imagination . It has been formulating ideas taken from the world of the deep unconscious , treading the thin 3D surface tension between ambient-noise , fat chunky beats and labyrinthine rhythmic overlays , spanning the sonic spectrum of environmental music composition and expressionistic chaotic information retrieval.

    what ?

Modernisation, Echoes, Work, Psychedelia, Bass frequencies, set to repetitive distorted beats and haunting ambient environmental sequencing set in a tangy bouillabaisse of deconstructed chaotic information...

    why?

The main idea of this music is to present music that contains so much information in so many diverse forms so that it all becomes one cohesive entity with an intelligence of its own . A murky sonic puddle teeming with various organisms.

    when?

The first 3 Octopus releases were released on German FAX +49-69/450464 record label. Octopus 4 was recorded between 1997 and 1999 just before the turn of the century . On this fine recording one of these 2 Octopus tracks is from the 1990’s and one of these is from the 2020’s, you can decide which you think is which. Time is an illusion, Tea-Time doubly so.

    huh?

huh?

It's a big weird wonderful world, so be yourself.

Here is the soundtrack to your dreams.

lyrics

Replace, upgrade, enhance, miniaturise, modernize.
I question the things I'm seeing and the nature of things we're creating.

Walk over the city like a giant, you'll see the buildings like crystals, how civilised, getting bigger, getting taller, always growing, what does it all do to me ?

On a good day I can see the blue sky but most days, its grey, and I cant see the trees.. I've been modernized.

Dreams keep coming, so I lie in wait at night, to spend time with you in a dream house, filled with toy cars and maps.

Ah the places we'll go in this world, cabins on stilts and beaches in endless dusk.

Hoshi ga kieidana (ほし が きえいだな) The stars are beautiful tonight

Charles Uzzell Edwards a.k.a. PURE EVIL grew up in South Wales and was by his own account the only new romantic in the village. He spent his teenage years customising his own clothes and experimenting with eyeliner. It was this love of urban street style that led him to do fashion degree in London, where he earned a bit of a reputation as a troublemaker.

He moved to San Francisco after college to get away from Margaret Thatcher and started designing for streetwear brand Anarchic Adjustment. AA was deeply involved in the rave scene out there so soon Charles was DJing and throwing parties and after discovering the Roland 606 he started working with Pete Namlook / Fax records in Frankfurt and released solo and collaborative music projects through the label as Octopus and as Create / A New Consciousness with Namlook.

In 2007 back in London Charles opened Pure Evil Gallery, his first gallery in Shoreditch on Leonard Street. Six years later he opened up the second, larger gallery just two doors from the original space. The galleries have been an incubator for up and coming street artists from around the world as well as being the studio for Charles' own PURE EVIL artwork. The success of his Nightmare series of dripping celebrity portraits has taken him around the world and has recently had successful shows across the USA, and in Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Brazil and even Mongolia.
